The Someday Cinema Series will screen the whimsical screwball comedy Harvey (1950), starring James Stewart, at Edmond Town Hall, 45 Main Street, on Sunday, January 20, at 1 and 7 pm.

Mary Fellows is sponsoring this film in honor of her birthday. The series is presented by Newtown Cultural Arts Commission.

Tickets are $3, and the matinee will be shown with subtitles.

Adapted from the Pulitzer Prize-winning play by Mary Chase, the story is centered around the sweet-souled Elwood P. Harvey (Stewart), whose best friend is a very tall rabbit named Harvey, invisible to anyone but Elwood.

With Elwood’s sanity in question, his sister Veta (Josephine Hull) and his niece Myrtle (Victoria Horne) are embarrassed by his peculiar friendship. For them, living a normal life is frustratingly difficult around Elwood’s eccentric behavior.

Veta decides to have Elwood committed, which backfires in hilarious fashion. Highlighting the subjectivity of psychiatry, Dr Chumley believes Elwood to be delusional, while Dr Sanderson believes Veta is a cunning psychopath.

Film fan John Baron admires Elwood for “always living in the moment, with a cheerful and contagious engaging nature that puts people at ease. He has time for everyone he encounters and is always ready to… share in some form of hospitality…”

Josephine Hull and James Stewart both starred in the original Broadway production of the play, which ran for more than four years.

Josephine Hull won both the Academy Award and the Golden Globe for Best Supporting Actress for her role as Veta in this film, and James Stewart was nominated for both awards.

The next film in the series will be Sleepless in Seattle, on Sunday, February 10, with screenings at 1, 4, and 7 pm.

In case of inclement weather, updates will be posted on The Newtown Bee's Facebook and Twitter pages. Any change of plans will also be noted at the top of this post.

James Stewart often referred to the role of Elwood P. Dowd, the lead character in the film Harvey, as his favorite.
