The Career Center At NHS Lists Scholarships

The Career Center publicizes all scholarships of which it is notified. A few of the scholarships, typically national ones, request that money be enclosed with the application. The Career Center believes that students should not have to pay to apply for scholarships.

If a student chooses to apply for a scholarship that charges a fee, however, the Career Center strongly advises that he or she first check its authenticity through the FTC Consumer Response Center, www.ftc.gov or 877-FTC-HELP; the National Fraud Information Center, www.fraud.org or 800-876-7060; or the Better Business Bureau, www.bbg.org or 703-276-0100.

McKelvey Foundation Scholarships — The McKelvey Foundation will award several $10,000 renewable academic scholarships for four years of college level study with an additional $2,500 to participate in summer programs abroad. Scholarships will be awarded to high school seniors who have demonstrated entrepreneurial sprit by owning and operating their own business while in high school. Recipients are not selected on the basis of academic achievement or financial need; awards are based solely on demonstration of entrepreneurial spirit. Lead Out Loud Scholarship Program — The Esteemed Woman Foundation will provide two $500 scholarships to high school senior girls who have completed the Lead Out Loud! Program this year. The application includes a personal leadership essay and letter of recommendation. Students may enroll in a four-year college or university, a two-year college, trade school or university, or other approved academic setting. All completed applications must be postmarked by April 2. The Career Center has application packets.

Kline Family Community Service Scholarship — This scholarship will be awarded to a graduating senior who has a strong record of community service who will be attending the University of Connecticut. At least one $250 scholarship is awarded annually. Information is available at the Career Center and at klinefamilyscholarship.org. The application deadline is April 25.

Orsola Mannuzza Scholarship — This local scholarship in the amount of $500 is sponsored by the Vontobel family in memory of Orsola Mannuzza and will be awarded to an exceptional senior student from Newtown High’s Italian 3H or 4H class for the continuation of the study of the Italian language in college. The application includes a two-page essay on, “The importance of Italian culture in your life and your motivation to continue to study it.” All applications must be submitted to Mrs Latowicki in the Career Center by April 1. The Career Center has application forms.

The Susan Fund Scholarships — The Susan Fund awards postsecondary scholarships to Fairfield County residents who have been diagnosed with cancer at some time during their lives. Criteria for considering scholarships are financial status, academic performance, community involvement, and personal commitment. A personal interview is expected. Applications are available at the Career Center or online at thesusanfund.org. The deadline is April 1.

The Hord Foundation Scholarships — The Hord Foundation scholarship program is open to black students graduating from high school who reside in greater Danbury. The award criteria are: acceptance to an undergraduate program or other program of continuing education, academic standing, contributions to school and community, financial need, a personal interview, and overall strength of the application. A completed application along with transcripts and two letters of recommendation are required. Information is available at hordfoundation.org and in the Career Center. All applications are due by March 3.

The Eagle Foundation Scholarships — The Eagle Foundation will select up to ten highly motivated high school seniors to receive four-year scholarships of up to $10,000 annually. Recipients must be residents of New York, New Jersey, or Connecticut and live within an hour’s drive of Fairfield County. Successful candidates will possess all of the following characteristics: a GPA of at least 3.4; a 1200 SAT score minimum; have held recognized leadership positions in their school and community; demonstrate the need for financial assistance in order to attend college and seek to do their share to make this world a better place. Excellence through Ethics Essay Contest — High school seniors are eligible to win a $5,000 college scholarship sponsored by Junior Achievement’s Excellence through Ethics Essay Contest. Applicants must write an original essay of no more than 500 words that presents a solution to an ethical dilemma question. The question is posted on the JA website at ja.org. All submissions are due by March 5.
