Boys’ Swimmers Compete Against Host Bobcats

Newtown High School’s boys’ swim team visited the Brookfield YMCA to take on the Bobcats on January 24 and fell 94-80 but took home some first-place finishes.

The 200 yard medley relay team of Peter Horan, Connor Kwarcinski, Gabe Petertonjes, and Max Luci-Bernard was first in a time of 1:41.85.

Kwarcinski took first in the 50 free in 22.48, and Luci-Bernard came in second in 23.32.

Petertonjes placed second in the 100 butterfly event in 59.46. Peter Horan won the 100 free in 51.03 and Luci-Bernard made it a one-two NHS finish in the event with a time of 53.11.

Newtown’s 200 free relay team of Luci-Bernard, Dan Naulaguari, Kris Luci-Bernard, and Kwarcinski placed first, clocking in at 1:35.68.

Horan won the 100 backstroke race, making his final touch in 53.96. Kwarcinski was second in the 100 breaststroke event in 1:08.43.

With the team victory sealed, Brookfield exhibitioned the final event. Newtown had the fastest time in the 400 free relay as Petertonjes, Naulaguari, Kris Luci-Bernard, and Horan finished in 3:36.50.

Petertonjes gave Newtown its fastest swim in the 200 individual medley and placed third (race times not reported). James Guerierri was third in the 100 backstroke event in 1:05.03.

The Hawks had several fourth-place outcomes: The 200 medley relay of Oliver Clancy, Grant Carson, Naulaguari, and Brayden Hazard finished in a time of 2:01.98. Guerierri raced to a time of 2:06.00 in the 200. Hayden Bobowick finished the 50 free in 26.24. Kris Luci-Bernard clocked in with a 500 free time of 5:50.13. The 200 free relay of Guerierri, Carson, Bobowick, and John Barzetti had a time of 1:46.85. Carson finished fourth in the 100 breaststroke race in a time of 1:12.80.

The Nighthawks will host the Joel Barlow of Redding-Bethel co-op on Tuesday, January 31 at 4 pm. NHS visits Masuk of Monroe Tuesday, February 7 at 6 pm. The Hawks have their final regular-season home meet Tuesday, February 14 when Bunnell-Stratford visits at 6 pm. The regular season concludes Tuesday, February 21 with a visit to New Milford at Canterbury School at 7 pm.
