Scholarships Available

The Newtown High School Career Center publicizes all scholarships of which it is notified. A few of the scholarships, typically national ones, request that money be enclosed with the application.

The Career Center believes that students should not have to pay to apply for scholarships. If a student chooses to apply for a scholarship that charges a fee, however, the Career Center strongly advises parents and students to check its authenticity through the FTC Consumer Response Center, www.ftc.gov or 877-FTC-HELP; the National Fraud Information Center, www.fraud.org or 800-876-7060; or the Better Business Bureau, www.bbb.org or 703-276-0100.

Newtown Youth Football/Cheerleading Scholarship — The Newtown Youth Football/Cheerleading Scholarship Fund was established in 2007 by the Newtown Youth Football/Cheerleading Board. The scholarship awards a total of $6,000 annually to qualified high school seniors who will continue their education after graduation at a college, university, or technical/professional school. Students must be residents of Newtown, participants in the Newtown Youth Football/Cheerleading program, Pop Warner or American Youth Football, and must demonstrate personal qualities deserving of this award. Applications are available through Naviance under the application form. All completed applications are due to Mrs Latowicki in the Career Center by April 2. Personal interviews may be conducted. The Board will present the awards at the High School Awards Ceremony.

UNICO National Scholarships — The Bridgeport Chapter of UNICO will award $1,000 to five high school seniors of Italian ancestry, must have at least one grandparent of Italian heritage. Eligible students for the local chapter scholarships must reside in the greater Bridgeport area which includes Newtown. The Career Center has the application form and the checklist. The submission deadline is April 2. The applications from the local chapter winners will be forwarded to UNICO National for their consideration in the national program which awards $6,000 over four years. Candidates will be evaluated on three letters of endorsement, academic achievements, extra-curricular school participation and community involvement. In May, at the awards ceremony, each winner will be asked to give a verbal presentation discussing/summarizing the topics in their essays.

Education Connection Scholarship — The Education Connection scholarship is for high school seniors who plan to pursue a career which relates to the organization’s mission and programs. Applicants should also show a long-term commitment to community service. The application and the essay are due by April 20. Refer to the scoring rubric before writing your essay. Applications are available in the Career Center or apply online at http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/BB9SYNQ.

Hawley School PTA Scholarship — The Hawley School PTA scholarship recognizes two graduating seniors from NHS who attended Hawley School. Applicants must be ranked academically in the top 50 percent of the graduating class and be accepted to a post-high school academic program. Applicants should demonstrate the elements of character, achievement, and dedication representative of the highest goals of education at Hawley School. Applications can be downloaded directly from Naviance. The scholarship chairperson will contact applicants to schedule the required interview. The submission deadline is April 13.

Dolores Ann Ventura Memorial Scholarship Fund — A $500 scholarship will be awarded to one graduating senior from Newtown High School. Eligible students must have a physical disability and/or have experienced challenges with school. An essay of no more than 500 words on the topic, “How College Will Impact My Life,” is also required. All applicants must have plans to attend a two- or four-year college, university, or technical school. Applications may be downloaded directly from Naviance under application form. The completed application and essay must be submitted to Mrs Kitty Latowicki in the Career Center by April 9. The award will be presented at the Senior Awards night.

Associated General Contractors of Connecticut Scholarship — The Associated General Contractors of Connecticut is awarding a two-year scholarship to Connecticut high school seniors who will pursue a career in construction. The scholarship provides $2,500 for tuition for both freshman and sophomore years and if available, two summers of related work experience and hands-on training with an AGC/CT contractor. Applicants must be graduating high school seniors entering a four-year building technology or civil engineering program as a freshman, or a two-year technical school with a construction course of study, with the intent of entering a four-year college upon completion of the technical school. Isidore Wise Scholarship Program — The Connecticut Children’s Medical Center Foundation will award five $4,000 scholarships to graduating high school seniors who are current or former patients of the Connecticut Children’s Medical Center and Newington Children’s Hospital. Students of Connecticut Children’s Medical Center School are also eligible. In the past, recipients have been high achievers who have excelled academically, are civic minded, and who have faced many physical and/or emotional challenges during their lives. Application form and instructions are available at www.connecticutchildrensfoundation.org/wise. Submit completed application package by March 31.

CT Society of CPA’s (CSCPA) Educational Trust Fund — Connecticut Society of CPA’s will award at least fifteen $500 scholarships to deserving Connecticut high school seniors majoring in the field of accounting in the fall. NHS can nominate one student for consideration. Contact Mrs. Latowicki in the Career Center prior to March 30, 2012 if you are interested. The scholarship will be presented on June 5 at the Aquaturf Club in Plainville.

Visine Students With Vision Scholarships — The first annual Visine Students With Vision Scholarship Program is offering $5,000 scholarships to graduating seniors who have demonstrated a clear vision or goal for their future. Recipients will be selected based on academic merit, school/community involvement, financial need and demonstrated vision. Reach for the Stars Survivorship Scholarship Program — Connecticut Children’s Medical Center will award $500 scholarships to graduating high school seniors who are past or present oncology patients of the Division of Hematology/Oncology at Connecticut Children’s Medical Center. Application form and instructions are available at www.connecticutchildrensfoundation.org/Reach. The submission deadline is April 20.

Sons of Portugal Scholarship — The Sons of Portugal Scholarship aims to recognize and reward academic excellence among local students of Portuguese descent. Scholarship awards ranging from $1,000 to $3,000 will be given to high school seniors and college students seeking a degree in an approved undergraduate program of study. Better Business Bureau Student Ethics Award — The Connecticut Better Business Bureau Student Ethics Scholarship Award recognizes a secondary school student in their junior year who personifies high ethical standards through leadership, community service, overall academic history, and personal integrity. A panel of independent judges will select a Connecticut high school junior through evaluation of a written essay. The application and a description of requirements are available online at www.ct.bbb.org. Entries and supporting materials must be mailed to BBB by June 22.

Kohl’s Cares Scholarship Program — Kohl’s national scholarship program recognizes outstanding young people, ages 6–18, for their volunteer activities in the community. The program will recognize more than 2,200 children with more than $440,000 in scholarships and prizes. Top national winners will receive a $10,000 college scholarship and $1,000 donation to a nonprofit on each winner’s behalf. Interested students must be nominated by someone age 21 years or older. Parents may nominate their own children. All nominations are due by March 15; online nomination instructions are available at www.kohlskids.com.

Adecco Engineering & Technical Future Engineers Scholarship — High school seniors interested in pursuing a major or minor in engineering are eligible to apply for a $2,500 scholarship. Students must write a one-page essay detailing your motivations in becoming an engineer. Submission deadline is April 9. B.I.G. (Believe, Inspire, Grow) Scholarship — B.I.G. offers a $500 scholarship that will benefit high school junior and senior women, who show exemplary entrepreneurial skills, strive to be future leaders in business, and seek financial independence. The applicant must submit a one- to two-page Business Plan by May 1. For more information and guidelines, refer to www.justthinkbig.us.

Northrop Grumman Engineering Scholarship — The Northrop Grumman scholarship is intended to support promising seniors who intend to pursue a career in an approved engineering program. Graduating high school seniors residing in Fairfield County and New Haven County are eligible for two scholarships of $2,500 per year renewable for four years. The required minimum composite SAT score is 1700 or an ACT score of 27. Applicants must also have a grade point average of 3.5. Applications must be submitted by March 31. Newtown Babe Ruth Softball — Newtown Babe Ruth Softball League is offering a $1,000 scholarship to a 2012 Newtown High School graduating senior who was a participant in the program for at least one full season. The scholarship is to be used for educational training beyond high school in any university, college, technical or nursing school. Application may be downloaded from Naviance. All applications must be submitted to Mrs Latowicki in the Career Center by April 13. All applications will be reviewed by the Scholarship Committee and, if necessary, they will conduct personal interviews. The award will be presented to the recipient at the High School Awards Ceremony.
