Newtown High School Lists The Currently Available Scholarships

The Career Center publicizes all scholarships of which it is notified. A few of the scholarships, typically national ones, request that money be enclosed with the application.

The Career Center believes that students should not have to pay to apply for scholarships.

If a student chooses to apply for a scholarship that charges a fee, however, the Career Center strongly advises that he or she first check its authenticity through the FTC Consumer Response Center, www.ftc.gov or 877-FTC-HELP, the National Fraud Information Center, www.fraud.org or 800-876-7060 or the Better Business Bureau, www.bbg.org or 703-276-0100.

Sandy Hook Elementary School PTA Scholarships — The Sandy Hook School PTA will be awarding two scholarships of $1,000. Applicants must be graduating seniors who attended Sandy Hook Elementary School and have been accepted to a post-high school academic program. The application process includes submission of a standard resume and indication of any involvement with young children or in the arts, in either a voluntary or paid situation. Applications are available in the Career Center and must be received by 3 pm on April 3.

Mary Frances Edgett Scholarship — The Northern Fairfield County Retired Teachers’ Association will award one $1,000 scholarship to a high school student who intends to major in education and have a career in teaching. The scholarship is open to seniors at Newtown, Joel Barlow, and Ridgefield High Schools. The application includes a 250-word handwritten essay explaining why they have decided to teach. Completed applications and supporting documents are due by April 7.

Meserve Memorial Fund Scholarship — High school seniors and high school graduates from the greater Danbury area who are planning to enroll or currently enrolled in a full-time, accredited, college or university leading to a degree in the environmental sciences are eligible to apply for the Meserve Memorial Scholarship. Applications are available in the Career Center and are due by March 15.

Education Connection — Two $750 scholarships to two high school seniors from Connecticut will be awarded by Education Connection. Applicants must demonstrate a long-term commitment to community service and plan to pursue a career that is related to Education Connection’s mission. The areas of study include, but are not limited to, education, early childhood services, food services, professional development, school-age programs, special education, technology, and transportation. Applications are available at www.educationconnection.org and in the Career Center. The deadline is April 3.

Sons of Portugal Scholarship — This renewable scholarship recognizes academic achievement, leadership, character, and community involvement from students of Portuguese heritage from the greater Danbury area. The five awards range from $1,000 to $3,000 and are given to high school seniors and college students for study at any accredited educational institution. Applications are available online at www.portugeseculturalcenter.com or in the Career Center. The deadline for completed applications is April 1.

Disabled Workers’ Scholarship — A $10,000 four-year annual scholarship is available to assist a Connecticut high school student who is planning to attend college and is the child of a worker who has a permanent and total disability because of injury that occurred in the workplace. The 2006 scholarship provides $1,250 per semester for four years. This student must demonstrate both academic excellence and financial need. The application along with a 500-word essay is due no later than March 30. The Career Center has applications.

UConn–Waterbury Campus New Student Scholarships — Students planning to attend the Waterbury Campus of The University of Connecticut in the Fall 2006 may be eligible for five different scholarships. The scholarships are available to full-time and half-time students and the range is from $250 to $1,500. The deadline for completed applications is March 31 and the Career Center has applications.

Connecticut Parks Association, Inc., Dennis Malone Memorial Scholarship — This scholarship is open to graduating seniors who plan to pursue a career in park management, forestry, horticulture, agronomy, or a closely related field at an accredited four-year college. The scholarship awards are up to $1,000, depending on the number of recipients. Financial need, academic achievement, and involvement in activities related to the intended course of study will be considered in the selection process. Applications are available at www.ctparks.org under “Announcements” or in the Career Center. The deadline is April 30.

Glenn Moon Scholarship — The Association of Retired Teachers of Connecticut will award a $1,500 renewable scholarship for high school seniors from Connecticut with a serious intention to pursue a teaching career. Four additional one-time scholarships for $1,000 will also be awarded. Applications will be evaluated on the basis of scholarship, financial need, character and personality, and educational activities. Applications must be postmarked by March 31.
