Town Players of Newtown is planning four productions for its 2021 season.

While that is the standard number of shows for the local community theater, the unusual part of this year’s announcement is that the season will be a hybrid, with two virtual and two in-person shows.

The entire 2020 season was canceled early last year, once COVID-19 reached the area. In April, the theater announced, “The 2020 season is now our 2021 season,” with plans to present four shows — The Elephant Man in the spring, Good People in the summer, 12 Angry Jurors in the autumn, and The Fantasticks in early winter — this year instead.

“For the safety of our audience, actors, and community, we have decided to suspend our 2020 season,” the local community theater group, which produces plays at The Little Theater on Orchard Hill Road, posted to their website last spring.

An e-mail last week indicated the update in plans. While The Elephant Man and The Fantasticks remain on the 2021 calendar for August and November, respectively, the spring and summer productions have been replaced with plans for a virtual cabaret in April and virtual one-acts in June.

Details are TBA for the virtual events.

The Elephant Man, to be directed by Terry Polvay, is scheduled for weekends from August 13 through August 28. The Fantasticks, with Jeff Spector directing, is also scheduled for four weekends, running November 5 through November 27.

Season tickets from 2020 will be honored; season tickets for 2021 are available for $75. Individual performance tickets are not yet on sale.

The group will sell tickets at 50% capacity for the productions, utilizing every other seat and implementing distancing guidelines, per its e-mail.
