Works by the contemporary artist Neil Bittner are on view at Newtown Municipal Gallery through March 31.

A Sandy Hook resident and master contemporary artist, Bittner creates serigraphs, lithographs, oils, oil painting collages, stained glass, and photography. The current exhibition features more than 20 of his oil painting collages. One work is a large-scale piece, one is approximately 8 by 8 inches, and all others are approximately 11 by 6 inches.

Managed by Newtown Cultural Arts Commission, The Gallery is open during weekdays from 8 am until 4:30 pm as well as late when a Town board or commission meeting is scheduled in the building.

Defined as an “artistic composition of materials and objects pasted over a surface,” Bittner’s oil painting collages create unique images on a variety of subjects. His collages have been described as a “minefield” where the images explode in the minds of viewers.

Bittner’s pieces are marked by precision and aesthetics that evoke a powerful emotional connection with the viewer. His work is represented in galleries, museums, and private collections around the world.

“Art is a synthesis of life’s experiences,” Bittner has said. “If I want to share a moment of reality with others, I must understand what is inside of me first.”

In addition to the current Municipal Gallery show, Bittner Studios is celebrating its 60th Anniversary this year with three invitational exhibitions beginning next month. Bittner’s silkscreens will be featured in the gallery of Woodbury Library, April 1-30; stained glass pieces will be on view at Easton Library Conference Room Gallery, May 16-June 30; and oil paintings will be at The Bruce Kirchner Gallery at Fairfield Library, August 26-October 21. An August 31 opening reception is planned for the Fairfield exhibition.
