BROOKFIELD - The Brookfield Craft Center is showcasing the talents of young artists in its third annual high school student art exhibit. "Artists on the Rise Youth Art Show 2018" opened in the Lynn Tendler Bignell Gallery on March 10, and continues to March 31.

More than 80 students from local high schools - including Bella Brodsky and Cora Kneen from Newtown - are displaying their work in a wide range of media, including ceramics, painting, photography, and more. Homeschooled students also had work accepted into the juried event.

"Each year this show gets bigger and better," Mr Lasser said. "We are really impressed with the talent displayed by these young artists. Giving these students the opportunity to display their work is an exciting part of what we do. We look forward to the community's engagement with this show."

Artists were invited to participate by their schools, but specific art classes and programs were not required for consideration. A jury of noted community members, artists, and educators evaluated all the submissions and finalists in making the awards.

Judges for the show were Erin Walrath, Shannon Riley, and Lisa Scroggins.

A Brookfield native, Ms Walrath earned her BFA from RISD where she was a student in the European Honors program in Rome. She currently works in collage, assemblage, installation, and sculpture at her studio in Danbury. She lives in Roxbury with her husband and three children and is represented by the John Davis Gallery in Hudson, N.Y.

Ms Riley has been a resident of Brookfield for ten years. She earned her BFA Studio Art from The College of New Rochelle and then an MS in Education from Western Connecticut State University. She has been teaching for 11 years at Brewster High School in Brewster, N.Y. She works in mixed media and currently serves as secretary of Brookfield Arts Commission.

Ms Scroggins has lived mostly in urban settings; her creative thinking often turns to nature and organic forms. It seems only natural to her to sculpt from nature. The artist's love of ceramics began in high school and progressed through college and beyond. She attended the Rhode Island School of Design, and Parsons School of Design in New York City, graduating with a BFA in graphic design. She currently teaches all areas of art to students K-12 grade and creates whimsical ceramics at her Connecticut studio.

Brookfield Craft Center was founded in 1952 and is recognized as one of the core fine craft educational institutions in America. The center is a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit organization, offering classes and workshops in glass arts, jewelry, woodturning, ceramics, blacksmithing, fiber arts, and other creative endeavors taught by nationally acclaimed local and visiting professional artists.

The Lynn Tendler Gallery is within the main campus building, at 285 Whisconier Road (Route 25) in Brookfield, just north of the four corners intersection with Route 7. The gallery and its gift shop are open Tuesday through Friday, noon to 5 pm; Saturday, 11 am to 5 pm; Sunday, noon to 4 pm; and by appointment.
