Celebrate The Family, Sunday At Discovery

BRIDGEPORT — “Celebrating the Family” is the theme for the next Sunday Celebrations afternoon of programming at The Discovery Museum on Sunday, April 9, from 1 to 6 pm.

The Sunday Celebration will feature a variety of family-centered activities with special guests the Grumbling Gryphons Traveling Theater, who will present the original play The Ghost Net, and the opening of Kids at Work, the new pre-school play area. Grumbling Gryphons have performed throughout the eastern United States including Lincoln Center in New York City and theatres in Philadelphia and Miami.

There will also be opening receptions for work by two artists — sculptor Chandler Davis of Devon and painter Adam Kaplan of Fairfield. Both receptions will run concurrently from 4 to 6 pm. Mr Davis’ “Dance of the Shells” is a series of larger-than-life fiberglass seashells that will be exhibited through August. Mr Kaplan’s “Nothing to Fear” paintings take a fun look at scary things and will be on exhibit through June.

Additional activities will begin at 1 pm, with a “Make a Mask” workshop, where children can create masks and props for the Grumbling Gryphons performance. At 2 pm the museum will host a drama workshop open to children age 8 and up.

At 4 pm, an interactive performance of The Ghost Net will take place. The Ghost Net is an environmental musical of the sea filled with magic, humor and imagination. The cast for the hour-long play will include children from the 2 pm drama workshop.

There also will be an opening reception from 5 to 6 pm for an exhibit of works by students from the museum’s art workshops.

Sunday Celebrations are included with admission to The Discovery Museum, which is at 4450 Park Avenue. Admission for adults is $7; senior citizens, students with ID and children ages 3-18 are $5.50; and children under age 3 are admitted free.

Sunday hours are noon to 5 pm. The museum is also open Tuesday through Saturday, 10 am-5 pm. For more information, call 203/372-3521, extension 115.
