Paul Bastiaanse and Dan Hern of Valley Restoration in Torrington were above it all, Tuesday morning, April 16, as they repaired the stem and set a new gilded ball in place on the flagpole.

The gilded ball that formerly topped the flagpole was lost last August when a truck hit the pole, knocking the ball off its post. Despite a search in the area at that time, the 16-inch diameter ornament was never recovered.

Renovations to the flagpole are usually funded by efforts of retired Newtown Police lieutenant David Lydem.
