Police Plan Sobriety Checkpoint

For The Weekend

Police plan to hold a sobriety checkpoint at an unspecified location in town during the evening hours of Saturday, May 2, and early morning hours of Sunday, May 3.

Sergeant Douglas Wisentaner said the event will be the first of several such checkpoints to be held during the coming months.

All motorists traveling in both directions through the checkpoint will be stopped by police and briefly interviewed to detect people who are driving under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs, he said.

The checkpoint will be clearly posted and alternate routes around the checkpoint will be available, according to the sergeant.

The purpose of such checkpoints is to reduce the number of injuries and fatalities that are caused by people driving under the influence. Publicizing the checkpoint in advance is intended to deter such drunken driving, according to police.

Town police will use a federal grant to cover 75 percent of the costs of the sobriety checkpoint.
