REEVES SCHLEY PAINTINGS AT JAMES GRAHAM & SONS w/3 cuts
avv/gs set 5-2 #698656
NEW YORK CITY â An exhibition of recent watercolors and oil paintings by Reeve Schley is on view at James Graham & Sons at 1014 Madison Avenue, at 78th Street, through June 9.
The show will feature more than two dozen landscapes, still lifes and portraits that range from sketchy renderings created from pale washes to more structural compositions that are dense with form and saturated color.
This is Schleyâs 18th solo exhibition with the gallery. A color catalog accompanies the exhibition.
Schley is well known for his depictions of people at leisure. Picnics, tennis games and sunbathers are common themes, as are landscapes executed on-the-spot at beaches and riversides. The artist has also made portraits throughout his long career, and the forthcoming show will highlight this aspect of his practice with two large oils.
More recently, Schley has been portraying scenes from his rural New Jersey farm. The artist has been raising cattle for more than 20 years, but only in the past few years has he been exhibiting works depicting his herd. Regardless of the subject matter, Schleyâs ability to convey the mood and atmosphere of the scene in front of him makes his work seem timeless.
Schley was born in New York City in 1936. He received his BA from Yale University and his MFA from the University of Pennsylvania. Schley had his first solo show with James Graham & Sons in 1973. His works are in several museum collections, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Brooklyn Museum of Art, the Yale University Art Gallery and the National Academy of Design. Schley lives and works in Whitehouse, N.J.
