Girls’ Tennis Team Keeps Winning

Newtown High School’s girls’ tennis team won three more matches this week and improved to 9-2 this spring.

The Nighthawks earned all three wins in convincing fashion — toppling Immaculate of Danbury 6-1 on April 27, blanking Bunnell of Stratford 7-0 on April 29, and rolling past Bethel 6-1 on May 2.

No. 1 singles player Lauren Frazzetta earned a pair of 6-0, 6-0 triumphs against her Immaculate and Bethel counterparts, and worked her way past Bunnell’s Jill Broadbin 6-4, 6-2. At No. 2 singles, Ale Fuentes also claimed all three of her matches in two-set style. At third and fourth singles, Newtown Coach Maureen Maher used a combination of players throughout the matches, with Maria Biondi winning twice, and Grace Winans and Mia Terracino also coming out on top. Biondi overcame a first-set loss to Bethel’s Sara Islam to prevail 2-6, 6-2, 7-6.

In doubles play, Newtown’s top tandem of Meghan Loose and Julia Frattaroli, along with the No. 2 team of Sara Benson and Stephanie Roman, earned three two-set triumphs. At third doubles, Maggie Kost and Ayesha Dholakia won twice, and Annie Beier and Meghan Logan teamed up for a win in the Bunnell match.
