NHS Girls’ Lacrosse Team Unbeaten In Conference

The Newtown High School girls’ lacrosse team keeps winning. The girls remained perfect in South-West Conference play and improved to 8-1 overall with wins over New Fairfield, Pomperaug of Southbury, and Immaculate of Danbury this past week.

Meaghan Carney scored four goals, Kaitlin Brophy had three goals and four assists in 16-6 win over New Fairfield on April 28. Newtown came up with nine pass interceptions, led by Kaitlyn VosWinkel’s four and Kelly O’Connor’s three pickoffs. Celeste Cheung made nine saves on the 14 shots she faced, and Jill Jagoe denied five of six shots.

The Nighthawks thumped Pomperaug 18-5 on April 30. Brophy had four goals and five assists to lead the attack, Katie Canavan also registered four tallies, and Erin Brown and Erin Kenning both netted hat-tricks. Jagoe made eight saves in the win.

In a 20-6 win over Immaculate on May 3, Newtown spread out the scoring with a dozen players getting on the score sheet with a goal and/or assist. Brophy erupted for a six tallies and added an assist, Kenning scored three times, and Meaghan Brophy, Meaghan Carney, and Brown all scored twice. Meredith Bridges hit the net once and added two assists in the triumph. Cassie Ekstrom scooped seven of her team’s 21 ground ball pickups.

The Nighthawks were scheduled to host Wilton from the FCIAC on Wednesday (after The Bee sports section went to press). The Hawks are slated to play road games with Joel Barlow on May 6 and Notre Dame- Fairfield on May 10.
