The Society of Creative Arts of Newtown (SCAN) will host Sandra Cointreau presenting an art demonstration/critique entitled “Watercolor Demonstration: Misty Forest Stream.”

Cointreau’s program is planned for Wednesday, May 25, at 5 pm, in the lower meeting room of C.H. Booth Library, 25 Main Street.

This demonstration is open to the public and admission is free.

Trained as an engineer in the 1960s — and the only woman in her graduating class of 1,000 students — Cointreau always sketched and painted to balance the rigors of her analytical career, which took her to more than sixty countries.

Regularly taking classes and attending life drawing groups, she has also honed her technique through books and DVDs created by master watercolor painters. She paints what she most knows and loves, including horses and the plants, trees, and waterways of Connecticut.

Using photographs for anatomy and details, she relies on memories and imagination for portions of every painting.

During her demonstration at Booth Library, Cointreau will demonstrate some of her approaches to doing an imagined landscape in watercolor.

Her paintings are currently on view at Studio Hill Gallery in Woodbury, The Silo Gallery in New Milford, and The Senior Center in Roxbury. She has shown with SCAN, Kent Art Association, Washington Art Association, and Gallery 25 in New Milford, and various watercolor society juried shows.

Reservations are not taken for SCAN programs, but additional information is available by visiting SCANart.org.

“Mountain Mist” is a watercolor by Sandra Cointreau, who will share some of her approaches to creating a similar scene when she visits Newtown later this month.
