Officers located Matthew J. Hanson, 31, of Manchester (Conn.), in his vehicle, attempting to leave the area.

It was the second time in as many weeks that Hanson was found in the area unwanted.

Two-Vehicle Accident

Newtown Police, Newtown Hook & Ladder firefighters, and Newtown Volunteer Ambulance Corps all responded to the area of Mt Pleasant Road (Route 6) and Blackman Road around 4:23 pm, Thursday, May 22, following reports of a two-vehicle accident.

According to the police report, a 2008 Acura TI and a 2004 Lincoln Town Car were both traveling east on Mt Pleasant Road, approaching the western intersection of Blackman. The Acura, operated by Marc B. Piendl, of Milford, had stopped for another vehicle in front of it, which was making a left turn onto Blackman Road. Robert D. Haag of Sandy Hook, operating the Lincoln, told police he realized too late that traffic had stopped, according to the police report. Haag braked, and steered to the right, but was unable to avoid colliding with the Lincoln.

Following an impact, the Acura came to rest on the eastbound shoulder of Mt Pleasant, with extensive damage to the rear. The Lincoln also came to rest on the eastbound shoulder of Mt Pleasant, on the grass, with extensive damage to its front end.

Piendl reported back and wrist pain. He was checked by medical personnel, but did not go to the hospital.

Robert Haag reported lower back pain and was transported to a hospital for treatment. Joanne Haag, a passenger in the Lincoln, also reported lower back pain and chest pain, and was also transported to a hospital for treatment.

All involved were wearing seat belts. None of the airbags in either vehicle deployed.

Both vehicles were towed from the scene.

Robert Haag was issued a verbal warning for following too close.

Spitting Mad

A 40-year-old Sandy Hook woman was arrested this month after spitting on a customer in one of Newtown’s supermarkets.

Newtown Police responded to Big Y World Class Market, 6 Queen Street, on May 18, after a male contacted the department to report the incident. The male told police that he had been in an argument with a woman about going the wrong way down an aisle and that during the argument, the female spit in his face.

Following pandemic protocols, Big Y is among the supermarkets that have designated one-way travel for foot traffic, to minimize face-to-face contact between shoppers and store employees.

An investigation was conducted and the female was identified as Martine Shanchuk, 40, of Sandy Hook. Officers spoke with Shanchuk, who told them she saw a young male walking in the wrong direction in one of the store’s aisles, so she felt it was necessary to tell him to turn around and enforce Big Y’s rules herself. She told the officers that the male did not turn around, so she stopped in the aisle to prevent him from continuing in the wrong direction.

Based on statements from both parties, police determined that Shanchuk continued to yell at the unidentified male. Because he was not listening, the police report states, she removed her face mask and spit in the male’s face.

Shanchuk was arrested, and charged with one count of Breach of Peace 2nd Degree. She was released on a written promise to appear in court, and issued a court date of July 17.

Operating Under The Influence

Newtown Police responded after receiving a call from the occupant of a Berkshire Road resident on May 15, when it was reported that a person was asleep in a vehicle in their driveway.

Upon arriving, police report they located Jaime Lizando Ordonez-Rodriguez, 30, of Danbury, unconscious in a vehicle. Following an investigation, Ordonez-Rodriguez was arrested and charged with Operating a Motor Vehicle while Under the Influence of Alcohol/Drugs.

Following processing and the posting of a $145 bond, Ordonez-Rodriguez was given a court date of July 22 to respond to the charges.
