Cortney Roy Bird of Newtown recently received a bachelor of arts degree from Bowling Green State University in Ohio.

Wendy Borst, daughter of Jim and Laurie Borst of Sandy Hook, was named a United States National Award Winner in science. She is a student at Newtown Middle School and was nominated by teacher John Girard. Her grandparents are Joe and Barbara Borst of Sandy Hook.

Notre Dame Catholic High School recently announced students who were named to the honor roll for the third marking period. Michael Pankowski and Liz Talamo of Newtown attained honors this period.

Jeffrey B. White, son of Jim and Dolores White of Newtown, graduated May 20 from Boston University with a master’s degree in journalism, with distinction. He is a 1995 graduate of Newtown High School and a 1999 graduate of Boston College.

Gregory B. White, son of Jim and Dolores White of Newtown, graduated May 27 from Cornell University College of Engineering with a bachelor of science degree in operations research and industrial engineering. He is a 1996 graduate of Newtown High School.

Walter McCarthy of Sandy Hook was awarded an honorary degree of humane letters from The College of New Rochelle during May 24 commencement exercises.

Mr McCarthy has served at the college as Chief Financial Officer since 1979. He will be retiring from the college in June. He has served as treasurer of the Middle States Association of Colleges & Secondary Schools and has been a member of 32 national and four international teams for the association. He is also a member and a past president of the Eastern Association of College and University Business Officers.

He resides with his wife, Pat, in Sandy Hook and has two adult children, Craig of Boston and Kate of Sandy Hook.

Michael J. Brokaw, son of Mike and Leslie Brokaw, graduated from Maine Maritime Academy on May 6. He now holds a bachelor of science degree in marine engineering technology and a third assistant engineering license with the Coast Guard.

During his four years at MMA, he was an active member of the Bagaduce Ambulance Corp as an EMT. Mr Brokaw received his commission on May 6 in the United States Naval Reserves as an Ensign. He is currently on the M/V Sgt William R. Button. The Button is heading to Guam. Mr Brokaw is a 1997 graduate of Newtown High School.

Jennifer L. Brokaw, daughter of Mike and Leslie Brokaw, recently returned from the sea. Miss Brokaw’s assignment was on the USNS Capable. Prior to going to sea, she studied for and obtained her United States Coast Guard Mate License for unlimited tonnage and her 1,600 ton Masters License.

She is a 1995 graduate of Newtown High School and a 1999 graduate of the Maine Maritime Academy.

Cassie Shewmaker, daughter of David and Leah Shewmaker of Newtown, was recently named to the spring 2001 dean’s list at the College of William & Mary.
