To the Editor:
On behalf of the Citizen Police Academy Class of 2011, I would like to thank our Newtown Police Department for hosting the recently completed program. In its 16th year, the objective of the academy is to provide citizens of Newtown with a better understanding of police department operations and to open communications between local citizens and the department.
The ten-week, three-hour-per-week class included presentations by our local Officers Santucci, Penna, Ketchum, Silver, Figol, Wood, McGowan, Sergeant Robinson, and Lieutenant Vanghele. In addition there were visits by Connecticut State Attorney Stephen Sedensky and Special Agent Kosanovich from the FBI. Presentations and demonstrations included traffic and accident reconstruction, crime scene and forensics, laws of arrest, search and seizure, juvenile law, use of force and firearms, domestic violence, DUI, and motor vehicle law. The K9 program presentation by Officer Figol and police dog Baro was especially impressive and our field trip to the Connecticut Forensic Lab in Meriden added to the depth and excitement of the class.
I would like to thank Sergeant David Kullgren for coordinating and overseeing the class and all of the officers and guests who made presentations to our group. Also let me thank all of the officers that let us each individually âride alongâ on a patrol shift. The âride alongâ truly provided us with firsthand knowledge and insight into our police department that gave us more of an appreciation for the wide variety of activities that our police officers encounter 24/7.
It was an informative and well organized program, and I certainly have a better appreciation of the dedication and training of the members of our Newtown Police Department.
