‘It Is Never Okay’

To the Editor,

I read The Newtown Bee article today about the Newtown Allies’ rally on Tuesday night (“Neighbors, Allies, And Calls For Change On Somber Anniversary,” The Newtown Bee, May 28, 2021). What I said was that the boy called me the “N” word. The boy didn’t say it in front of me, he said [it] to me and another kid who is also Black. I didn’t know what to do, so I raised my hand and told a teacher. At first I didn’t think they were going to do anything, but they did. I told everyone to speak up about racism.

I didn’t say this at the rally, but we had a class meeting and I asked for a discussion with the boy who called me that name. I told him that when he called me [the “N” word] I felt like you hate me and don’t think I’m a person. He said he was sorry and I was going to say “Okay,” but Mrs Drum told me not to. It is never okay.

I did accept his apology.

Thank you,

Kenneth Miller, age 10

72 Forest Drive, Sandy Hook June 4, 2021

Editor’s note: Kenneth spoke at the May 25 Newtown Allies For Change rally marking the anniversary of the murder of George Floyd.
