Travel Basketball Coaches

Coaches for all age levels, 5th through 8th grade (girls and boys), are needed for the Newtown Parks and Recreation travel basketball program. Anyone interested should call John Giorno at 270-9579. Also, a tournament for travel basketball players is being organized and anyone interested in helping should call Mr Giorno or Jack Shpunt at 426-1935.

NHS Football Clinic

Newtown High School head football coach Ken Roberts, along with members of his staff, will conduct a youth football clinic (for players ages 8 to 15) from July 23-27. The clinic will run from 9 to 11:30 am every day will cover conditioning, fundamentals, and specialty skills. It will also include contact drills and a live scrimmage at the end. Players will be grouped by age, size and ability. Equipment rentals will be provided to those who need it. High school players are NOT eligible. Registration fee is $85 and all proceeds will benefit the Newtown Touchdown Club. Swim Coaches Needed

Newtown High School is in need of a girls’ (fall season) and boys’ (winter season) swim coach for the 2001 and 2001-2002 seasons. Anyone interested in coaching should call Newtown High athletic director Gregg Simon at 426-7655 as soon as possible.

Beachside Soccer Tryouts

Beachside of Connecticut Soccer Club will be holding tryouts for the 2001-2002 campaign on Monday, July 9, through Thursday, July 12, from 5 to 6:30 pm, at Green Farms Academy in Westport. Players at the U13 and U14 level will tryout July 9 and 11, while players at the U15, U16 and U17 levels will tryout on July 10 and 12. Mickey Kydes, a former MISL, USISL and MLS player, is the director of coaching at Beachside. Call Marcina Cristobal at 1-203-247-5584 for further information.

MLS Soccer Camp

The Newtown Soccer Club will once again host the MLS Soccer Camp, which will run from July 30 through August 3, and is open for players ages 5 to 12. Cost is $84 and that includes shirt and soccer ball. Brochures will be available from soccer coaches and at the Booth Library (outside lobby of children’s room, on bench). Host families will also be needed for visiting coaches. Call Anne Rose at 426-6416 for further information.

Calhoun Basketball Camp

The Jim Calhoun Basketball Camp for boys ages 9 to 17 will be held in three sessions at the University of Connecticut in Storrs. The sessions will run from July 8-12, and July 27-29 (this one is for high school players only). The camp hosts overnight and day campers. Campers will receive a free basketball, t-shirt, meals and top-flight instruction from high school and college coaches – as well as the UConn coaching staff. Trumbull_Soccer Tryouts

Tryoyuts for the Trumbull Rockets boys’ U14 premier team (fall season) will be held Monday and Wednesday, July 9 and 11, from 6:30 to 8 pm, at Hillcrest Middle School in Trumbull. Call Joe DeCarle at 261-4519 for further information.
