Police Expand DUI Enforcement

To find and apprehend drunken drivers who are traveling on local roads during the Independence Day holiday period, town police are conducting extra roving patrols, according to police patrol Sergeant John Cole.

Police planned to start their additional patrols on Tuesday, July 3, and continue the extra patrols through Saturday, July 7, according to Sgt Cole.

The goal of increased patrols is to reduce the number of injuries and fatalities caused by DUI-related accidents. The high visibility police patrols are intended as a deterrent to drunken driving.

Motorists who show signs of alcohol and/or drug intoxication while driving will be stopped by police and investigations will be conducted, according to Sgt Cole.

Federal highway safety grant funds are used to cover 75 percent of the police overtime costs for such expanded DUI patrols.
