Veterans and first responders have all answered countless calls for service, and now they are being called to a first-of-its-kind series of health screening events aimed at ensuring their hearts are in tip-top health.

Donna A Monteleone, Senior Vice Commander of American Legion Post 202 of Newtown and Brookfield, in partnership with the Newtown VNA and Veterans of Brookfield Foreign Wars Post 10201, is organizing a pair of “Cardiology Prevention” activities this fall exclusively for veterans and first responders.

The local event, which also includes a flu shot clinic, is happening at the Newtown Community Center, 8 Simpson Street in Fairfield Hills, October 10, from 3:30 to 8 pm.

A similar event is scheduled on Wednesday, October 23, at the Brookfield Senior Center, 100 Pocono Road, from 6 to 9 pm. This session is sponsored by the Veterans of Foreign Wars Jason D Lewis Post 10201.

“All Connecticut veterans and first responders are welcome to either happening,” Ms Monteleone said. “Having the two dates and locations allows for flexibility.”

Ms Monteleone said both sessions will include two timely and relevant talks.

Sheila M. Mattei, PA-C, MPH, MSHS, will discuss how combat exposure, deployment, and chronic stress greatly increases the risk for heart disease at younger ages in veterans and first responders.

A representative from Dental Associates of Connecticut will speak about the relationship between oral care and heart health.

Anyone planning to receive a flu shot is asked to bring their VA or Insurance Card.

A Danbury Vet Center and Connecticut DVA representative will be there to assist veterans not currently enrolled and answer questions regarding VA benefits.

Non-perishable donations will be gratefully accepted for Faith Food Pantry at this event as well.

Veterans are requested to bring their DD214, if available. Reservations are requested but not required.

Anyone planning to attend the Newtown session may RSVP to Cris Fadus via e-mail at rsvpnewtownevent@gmail.com or by phone at 203-300-8175 by October 4.

Those planning to attend the Brookfield session are requested to RSVP to Van DaCosta at i.m.dacosta89@gmail.com or to call 203-297-4268 by Friday, October 18.

Veterans and responders are welcome to attend either or both events.
