Helen Lewis Jurgens, age 95, of Oxford, Conn., passed away on July 12, 2022. Helen was born at Griffin Hospital, Derby, Conn., on February 4, 1927, to Myron and Fannie Vogelbach Lewis. She married Alfred Jurgens on November 21, 1949. They were married for 51 years when Alfred passed away in May 2001. Together they raised two children, Clayton and Susan, in Sandy Hook, Conn., before moving to Oxford, Conn.

Helen and Al enjoyed many years of camping with friends and family and took many trips around the country in their RV. The trip of a lifetime to Alaska in 1994 was a great highlight. Together they participated in square dancing, bocce, and other activities with the Oxford Seniors. Helen was a gifted crafter, making dozens of quilts to welcome babies of relatives, friends, and neighbors. She and her sisters, Betty and Doris, donated hundreds of hours of their needlework and sewing talent in support of the annual Christmas fair held at their church.

Helen is survived by son, Clayton Jurgens and his wife, Marie Sullivan, and daughter, Susan Shpunt, and her husband, Jim. She is also survived by her four grandchildren, Jamie Shpunt, Jessica Fiorini and husband Joseph, Maria Wallenta and husband Jon, and Jason Jurgens. Helen has six great-grandchildren: Aiden, Brandon, Katie, Molly, Jacob, and Liam; two sisters, Betty Chapman of Southbury, Conn., and Inez Ely of South Carolina; and numerous nieces and nephews, who also survive Helen.

Besides her husband Alfred, Helen was preceded in death by siblings: Elmer, Robert, Reginald, and Doris.

A memorial service will be held at the United Church of Christ, 283 Main Street North, Southbury, on Friday, July 29, 2022, at 11 am. Interment will be private and at the convenience of the family.

In lieu of flowers, donations in Helen’s memory can be made to Oxford Ambulance, Oxford, Conn., or United Church of Christ in Southbury.
