Improper Turn

A 2015 Volvo Xc60 T6 Premier operated by Katie Lynn Ryan, 18, of Newtown, around 2 pm Sunday, July 12, turned left from South Main Street onto Sugar Street. While making the turn, the Volvo hit the front driver’s side fender of a 2016 Nissan Rogue, which was stopped for the traffic control signal.

Karen Walser, who was operating the Nissan, was in the left turn lane of Sugar Street, waiting to turn left onto Main Street.

The front driver’s side area of both vehicles was damaged; the Nissan may have also sustained undercarriage damage. That vehicle was towed from the scene.

Both drivers were wearing seat belts. Airbags did not deploy in either vehicle. There were no injuries.

Ryan was issued an infraction for Improper Turn.

Failure To Maintain Lane

Kevin M. Sweeney, 64, of Redding, was traveling south on Poverty Hollow Road, operating a 2001 Ford Explorer Sport Trac, at approximately 10:22 pm Sunday, July 12, when the vehicle veered off the southbound side of the roadway and into a ditch.

The passenger side of the Ford scraped against some trees. There were no injuries.

Sweeney was issued a verbal warning to Failure To Maintain A Proper Lane.

Failure To Grant Right Of Way

A 2007 Buick Terraza CXL operated by Cecilia M. Chavez-Arguello, 37, was stopped at the end of the I-84 off-ramp, at the intersection with Wasserman Way, at a red blinking traffic signal, around 10:12 pm Tuesday, July 14.

A 2013 BMW 328xi operated by Megan Mary Omeara, 19, of Monroe, was traveling westbound on Wasserman Way through the yellow blinking traffic signal at the intersection with the ramp.

The Buick proceeded past the red blinking light, into the intersection, and collided with the driver’s side door area of the BMW.

Both drivers and two passengers in the BMW were wearing seat belts. It was unclear whether a third passenger in the BMW was utilizing the vehicle’s protection system. No airbags deployed. No injuries were reported.

Chavez-Arguello was issued a warning for Failure to Grant Right of Way At An Intersection.

Vehicle Break-Ins, Items Recovered

Newtown Police report several vehicles in town were broken into during the overnight of July 14.

The department has recovered several items from one recovered stolen vehicle. These items include a vehicle tuner, a knife, a tablet, and a charger.

Passing On The Right

A 2007 Ford Ranger operated by Ylber Selmani, 50, at approximately 3:50 pm Sunday, July 18, was traveling east on Church Hill Road, directly behind a 2014 Subaru Outback 2.5i Premium operated by Christopher Stites.

As the Subaru slowed to turn into the driveway of 84 Church Hill Road, Selmani attempted to pass the Subaru on the passenger side of that vehicle.

The driver’s side of the Ford hit into the passenger side front tire area of the Subaru, damaging both vehicles.

Both drivers and a passenger in the Subaru, were all wearing seat belts. None of the airbags for the drivers or passengers deployed. No injuries were reported.

Selmani was issued a verbal warning for Passing On The Right.

Wallet Taken From Unlocked Vehicle

On July 19 at approximately 3:56 pm, Newtown Police spoke with a Joan Drive resident, who reported two vehicles at their property had been gone through during the previous overnight hours.

Sometime between 9:15 pm, July 18 and 8 pm, July 19, two vehicles, both parked in the home’s driveway and unlocked, had been entered.

Items were taken from both vehicles. Among the items taken was a wallet with an operator’s license, a credit card, loose change amounting to approximately $12 from one vehicle, and approximately $5 in loose change from the second vehicle. Neither vehicle had been damaged.

Residents of the area are asked to check their surveillance systems for suspicious activity and notify Newtown Police at 203-426-5841.

Police remind residents to lock their vehicles and not leave valuables in them. If valuable items must be left in a vehicle, keep them out of sight. The vast majority of thefts of and from vehicles are a result of leaving vehicles unlocked, according to local police.

Vehicle Entered, Charger Stolen

On July 19 at approximately 10:15 pm, a West Hartford resident who was visiting Newtown reported their vehicle had been entered sometime during the July 18-19 overnight.

The vehicle had been parked at a residence on Orchard Hill Road. The incident happened between 3 pm, July 18 and 10 am, July 19, when the owner discovered the vehicle had been entered. The vehicle had not been locked.

A cell phone/car port recharging unit valued at approximately $30 and a few dollars in loose change were the only items missing. There was no damage to the vehicle.
