A dozen young women crowded around 13-year-old Sabrina Boccuzzi, Tuesday afternoon, July 28, as she pitched a pan of hot marbles into ice water. The clear and green marbles had just come from a 20-minute bake in the oven at the C.H. Booth Library Meeting Room kitchen, and were well on their way to becoming the gems on handcrafted necklaces.

Sabrina, a member of Girl Scout Troop 55005 in Newtown and a rising eighth grader at Newtown Middle School, is leading three craft programs this summer at C.H. Booth Library, as part of the requirements to qualify for the Girl Scout Silver Award. The Cracked Marble Necklace class was the first in the series that will help Sabrina complete her “Cadette Journey,” putting into action the community-based portion of the Silver Award requirement.

“It looks like it exploded!” exclaimed Caitlin Farrell, as she examined the marbles bobbing among the ice cubes. As they fished the marbles from the water, the participants marveled at the numerous cracks within each of the glass orbs.

“I was available and it sounded interesting,” said 11-year-old Pearl Morosky, as to what had drawn her to the Tuesday class. Seated next to her, Sabrina Capodicci, 13, said that while not a big jewelry wearer, she had been intrigued to find out how the hot and cold would react and make the marbles crack.

“It’s cool,” she said, “how there are just all the cracks inside the marble.”

Class participants listened carefully as Sabrina explained how to attach the newly minted “jewels” onto the ribbon or string selected for the necklace. With some patient assistance, the items were completed, allowing each youngster to head home with her original creation.

Two Programs Still Available

On Monday, August 3, participants can try another medium for creating necklaces and key chains, when Sabrina offers Modge Podge Necklaces and Key Chains.  Students will use modge podge paste, fabric, and metal washers for crafting jewelry in this class.

The final program takes place Tuesday, August 11, when Sabrina presents a class on Temporary Tattoos. Participants will create an original drawing on special paper, ink the paper, and apply it, for a temporary tattoo lasting several days.

Classes are limited to ten students, ages 11 -14, and run from 3 to 4:30 pm. All classes take place at the C.H. Booth Library, 25 Main Street.
