Esther Marie (Ticehurst) Shanley, of Vernon, passed away in Tolland, with family at her side on Saturday, August 13, 2022, at age 91. She was born in Bethel on October 23, 1930, and was the daughter of the late William Henry Ticehurst and Estella (White) Ticehurst.

She grew up in Bethel, was a member of St Thomas Episcopal Church, and she graduated from Bethel High School in 1948. She was the widow of the late Edward Charles “Hank” Shanley, whom she married in Redding in 1952. They lived in Newtown for over 50 years, and after her husband died in 2010, Esther relocated to Vernon.

Among her memorable home activities were quilting, gardening, and home canning. For a number of years, she worked as a cafeteria cashier in the Newtown school system. Later she worked at TR Paul in Newtown, retiring from there some years ago.

She is survived by three children, David (Ruthanna) Shanley of Newtown, Thomas Shanley of Newbury Park, California, and Alice (Jonathan) Brown of Tolland; five grandchildren, Ryan Shanley, Liam (KC) Shanley, Kieran Shanley, Shannon Brown, and Jason Brown; and numerous nieces and nephews.

A private family burial service will be held at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests considering donations to the Multiple Sclerosis Association of America.
