Three-Vehicle Crash Causes Injuries, Extensive Travel Delays

By Andrew Gorosko

A three-vehicle accident late on the morning of Saturday, August 28, on westbound Interstate 84, just east of Exit 9, sent three people to the hospital for treatment of injuries and caused lengthy travel delays on the highway, as well as area secondary roads where motorists sought to avoid the I-84 traffic congestion.

Joe Miller, the second assistant fire chief of Newtown Hook & Ladder who served as the incident commander, said that firefighters were called to the scene at 10:59 am, after ambulance volunteers had been dispatched to the incident.

A traffic backup on westbound I-84 that had formed behind the accident slowed firefighters’ response to the scene, which involved several miles of travel.

Hook & Ladder firefighters who went to the collision worked to carefully remove two people from inside a Ford station wagon at the accident, taking care not to injure them, Mr Miller said.

Three vehicles were involved in the accident: a Ford station wagon, an Acura sedan, and a Chevrolet pickup truck.

Omar Andujar, 28, of Waterbury, who was driving the Acura, and Yaritza Andujar, 25, of Waterbury, who was a passenger in the Acura, both were treated for injuries and then released from Danbury Hospital, a hospital spokeswoman said.

Also, Kevin Dias, 18, of Waterbury, who was a passenger in the Ford, was treated at the hospital and released, the spokeswoman said.

State police listed the damage to the three vehicles as ranging from minor to moderate.

After investigating, state police issued Acura driver Omar Andujar an infraction for driving an unregistered vehicle.

The state police gave Chevrolet driver George Hope, 24, of New Fairfield an infraction for following too closely, stating that Hope caused the accident.

State police issued Ford driver Zamora Gerson, 24, of Waterbury an infraction for driving without a license.
