Work By Three, Including Newtown Sculptor, In ‘Obsession’

KENT — Peter Lawrence Gallery will host the work of three artists in its next exhibition.

“Obsession,” opening on September 7, will offer an 18-panel mega painting by James Napoleon that was based on a performance by the Italian vocalist Mina Mazzini, photography by David Land, and new work by the Newtown sculptor James Travers.

James Napoleon is an award-winning painter from Kent. He studied painting at the School of Visual Arts in New York City, and his work is represented in private and corporate art collections.

“My paintings are essentially a language about the experience of paintings,” he said. The Kent presentation will be the first show to include the mega-painting of Ms Mazzini.

David Land has been an artist and photographer for over 30 years. He studied at Silvermine College of Art and Connecticut College. He has done shoots for many local companies, corporations, families, and individuals. His work has been shown in local galleries and is collected all over the world.

Working mostly in welded steel, in his artist’s studio in Newtown, James Travers creates contemporary abstract metal sculpture that evoke visceral emotion. Ms Travers skillfully transforms scrap metal from “humble matter into exceptional art.”

An opening reception will be hosted by the gallery on Sunday, September 9, from 1 to 5 pm. The first 35 visitors to the opening will receive festive Mina buttons courtesy of Mr Napoleon.

The exhibition will remain on view until October 7.

The gallery is at 703 Kent Road (Route 7), and is open Friday through Sunday and by appointment. Call 203-746-5533 or visit PeterLawrenceGallery.com for additional information.
