The Resiliency Center of Newtown held an open house Monday, September 23, that included light refreshments, complimentary massages, reiki sessions, and an opportunity for visitors to learn about several upcoming programs being hosted for young people and adults.

The Resiliency Center offers trauma-informed, therapeutic services focused on long-term individual and community healing for children and adults impacted by the tragedy at Sandy Hook School on 12/14.

Among upcoming activities are:

October 1 and October 8 from 9 am to 1 pm, Ann Sandercox, LMSW, will lead two intensive workshops entitled “The Daring Way,” which will examine thoughts, emotions, and behaviors that are holding participants back and will help them identify new choices and practices to move them toward more authentic and wholehearted living. Each session is $175 and includes The Daring Way workbook.

Register by calling 203-364-9750.

The center is forming a new Mind-Body Medicine Skills Group beginning October 11-December 13, from 1 am to noon. Participants will learn self care skills to manage life changes while reducing stress and anxiety. The group will be facilitated by Lisa Donohue-Olivieri, LPC, LADC, ATR-BC. The fee is $75, and the group is limited to eight participants.

Deadline to register is October 7.

The Resiliency Center has also rescheduled a High Ropes Course at Newtown High School that was postponed earlier this year because of inclement weather. The rescheduled date is Thursday, October 24, from 1:30 to 4:30 pm, and the fee is $25 per participant.

This is set on an early release day for local schools, and there is a 25 person cap for attendance.

According to Beth Hegarty, MBA, the center’s client relations & administrative support specialist, students will participate in low and high ropes climbing, trust initiatives, group/cooperative activities, and relay activities at the new High Ropes Course.

The afternoon will be directed by Jeremy O’Connell, and Resiliency Center staff will be onsite. Mr O’Connell is the Project Adventure instructor at Newtown High School.

The day is set for students in 5th through 8th grade. Participants will need to wear athletic clothing as well as sneakers, and bring a water bottle — a snack will be provided.
