From Trash Heap To Top Lot:

Rofhls Chair Brings $198,000

Cottone teaser

Must run 10-5

GENESEO, N.Y. — Discarded and destined for the dump, an extremely rare Arts and Crafts period chair by Charles Rohlfs was saved by a local resident many years ago and had since been used in an unassuming “double-wide,” until being consigned to Cottone’s for an auction this past Friday, September 28.

Creating quite a bit of interest from throughout the country, auction house principal Cindy Cottone reported ten phone lines active for the Rofhls hall chair as it crossed the block. Bidding on the lot was quick paced with the ornate high-backed chair with pierced carvings and organic ornamental decoration, circa 1900, selling for $198,000 to a phone bidder from Washington, D.C. A Walter Launt Palmer oil on canvas landscape also did well selling at $137,500.

A complete review of the auction will appear in a future issue.
