Newtown 25, Simsbury 0

Newtown 34, Bethel 12

Kevin McCarthy scored three touchdowns (on jaunts of 50, 41 and 30 yards) and John Fracker brought an interception back 35 yards for a touchdown as the Newtown Junior Midgets remained undefeated with a 25-0 win over Simsbury.

Early in the second quarter, Fracker opened the scoring with his interception and 35-yard return.

Then, the Newtown defense stiffened on a long Simsbury drive late in the second quarter with Lewis Thompson forcing a fumble (and then recovering that fumble) after a massive hit at the line of scrimmage and that led to another Midgets touchdown. First, Kyle Vignone raced 40 yards on a counter and, two plays later, Fracker and McCarthy – with the aid of a key block from Tyler Reszoly – hooked up on a 50-yard scoring pass to give the locals a 13-0 halftime lead.

In the third, the Midgets stopped Simsbury on a fourth-down effort and on the very next play, McCarthy took a pitch around end and sprinted 41 yards into the end zone to give Newtown a commanding 19-0 lead at the end of the third quarter.

The Newtown continued to bend, but refused to break entering the fourth quarter. Kevin O’Connell had a big drive stopping play when he slapped down a fourth down pass attempt from his corner position midway through the quarter.

The Midgets then took possession and on the next play Vignone took a counter play 45 yards that almost went the distance after a big block by Ian Kirner. Newtown drove deep but their drive stalled and Simsbury took over the ball with time running out. But Simsbury wasn’t going anywhere and after solid defensive plays by James Sharpe and Cody Fischer, the locals took over and soon scored on a 30-yard run by McCarthy (with a key block from Ian Kirner).

Nick Dinelli, Haakon Sorenson, Thompson and Andrew Seymour powered the D.

In a 34-12 win over Bethel two weeks ago, Fracker tossed touchdown passes to McCarthy and Vignone while Vignone added a run of 19 yards and a kickoff return of 67 yards for touchdowns. McCarthy also scored a TD late in the fourth quarter.

Fracker opened the scoring with a 35-yard swing pass to McCarthy. Strong blocking by Alex Nuefeld, Brian Killmurray, Chris Giglio, Ryan Korth and Andrew Seymour paved the way on the following drive as Vignone took a pitch and raced 19 yards into the end zone for a TD.

After Bethel scored its first touchdown, Fracker tossed a swing pass to Vignone, who took the ball 40 yards for a score. And then in the second half, Vignone took the opening kick 67 yards for another TD and a 28-12 Newtown lead.

Fischer, McCarthy and Sharpe made big defensive plays in the second half and on the final possession of the afternoon McCarthy busted off tackle and crossed the goal line at the buzzer for his second touchdown of the day.

The defensive line of Lewis Thompson, Seymour, Korth, Fischer, Dinelli and Sorenson played strong throughout the game.

JUNIOR PEE WEE GOLD

Newtown 33, Aspetuck 0

Five different players scored touchdowns as the Newtown Junior Pee Wee Golds blanked Aspetuck, 33-0.

Max Lopez and Pat Capozziello combined for better than 200 yards rushing and each scored touchdowns behind the solid blocking of Josh Villa, Jack Kearney, Tom Gleason, Michael Lengel and Tom Bauer. Quarterbacks Dan Hebert and Travis LeBlanc also tossed TD passes to power the offense.

Ends Pat Riccardi and Ryan Seymour anchored the defense and kept everything inside as linebacker KC Condon and linemen Robbie Hughes and Matt White clogged the middle.

PEE WEES

Newtown 27, Ridgefield 15

Andrew Cebry scored on runs of 54, 10 and 8 yards as the Newtown Pee Wees captured their first win over the season with a 26-15 decision over Ridgefield.

The offensive line of Matt Vavrek, Brendan McNamara, Mac Morlock,Will Fletcher, Louis Raab, Colin Gage, Trey Trudell, Kyle Hagerman, Michael Cascone and Mario Pizighelli opened some huge wholes for Cebry.

William Arndt scored the fourth touchdown on a QB keeper around the end. This was set up by some outstanding blocking by fullback Sean Ross, who was on fire all day long.

Michael Lord sparked the defense with an interception and two fumble recoveries while Jacob Enriquez recorded a pair of sacks.

MIGHTY MITES

Blue 21, Gold 2

In the much heralded inter-town rivalry, the Newtown Mighty Mite Blues defeated the Mighty Mites Golds, 21-2, and improved to 5-0 on the year.

The Blues scored on the opening drive with a well orchestrated offensive attack that was capped off with a Colton Smith 35-yard TD scamper off of the right side. Julian Dunn delivered the point after with a quick jaunt around the left end.

On the Blues next offensive possession, Dunn broke off left tackle and sprinted nearly 50 yards for the next touchdown of the game. Max Rucinski took the dive up the middle and added the point after.

The Blue finished up their afternoon when Dunn intercepted a pass over the middle and returned it 45 yards for a score. Once again, Rucinski chipped in the point after with another run up the gut.

Jack Lago and Jack Martin sparked the defense.

The Blues will attempt to maintain their perfect record against Aspetuck this weekend.
