Newtown High School students who earned Commended Student recognition from the National Merit Scholarship Program were recently honored at NHS.

Elijah Baraw, Mitchell Doherty, William Hornby, Rushil Jerfy, Anna Mattioli, Julia Totir, Sanjana Vakacherla, and Yvonne Wei were announced as Commended Students on September 30 by NHS Principal Dr Kimberly Longobucco.

According to the National Merit Scholarship Corporation, students qualify for the honor by taking the Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test. Of the roughly 1.5 million students who took the test, roughly 34,000 high performers are being honored as Commended Students.

“We are here to celebrate your awesome scores and how great we think you are,” Dr Longobucco said to the students present for the news announcement.

Newtown High School students who earned recognition as semifinalists in the National Merit Scholarship Corporation’s scholarship program were honored at the school on September 14 and September 18, as previously reported in The Newtown Bee. This year, NHS students Colden Bobowick, Sophia Child, Julia Dolan, Collin Hoffman, Zachary Majeski, Lauren Nalajala, and Joseph Tartaglia were surprised with the news that they had been named as semifinalists.
