To the Editor:

If anyone is under the delusion that racism is not a problem in Newtown, listen to Jahana Hayes’s Newtown Town Hall on October 13. I was horrified that someone Zoom-bombed the meeting, spewing racial epithets. It was not the first time Representative Hayes has faced racist attacks since taking office. Our congresswoman remained calm, despite the abuse. And we are so lucky that despite the pain she has repeatedly endured as a Black woman, and as the first woman of color to represent Connecticut, she will continue to fight for every single person in Connecticut’s 5th Congressional district.

Representative Hayes has been working to solve the problems facing every one of us today. She is fighting so that we all have equal access to healthcare, enough to eat, a high quality education, a good job, and a safe and secure future. She knows first hand how COVID-19 can affect us, and she is fighting to prioritize relief for frontline workers, families, small businesses, and farmers who are struggling because of the pandemic. She is fighting to make sure that the Postal Service will continue to deliver for us. She is fighting to protect our air, water, and natural resources, and to keep Connecticut safe and beautiful. She is fighting for every one of us, regardless of our beliefs, and she will not be silenced by those who are angry and full of hate.

Representative Hayes is calling on all of us to imagine a better future. Together, we can make it reality. Please join me in voting to reelect Jahana Hayes to fight for us in Congress.
