Harriman-Stites’ Candidacy Of Concern

To the Editor:

I am very concerned with the candidacy of Rebekah Harriman-Stites, the Democrat for State Representative. She is heavily financed by Chris Murphy, co-sponsor of an AOC bill to remove school resource officers from schools. Read his bill and ask if this legislation is right for Newtown knowing that SROs have kept our schools safe since 2014.

Rebekah points to her endorsement by “Working Families Party,” a radically funded group dedicated to “Shift Resources Away from Policing.” She says she won’t? Maybe publicly disavowing this organization would confirm what she claims.

Harriman-Stites avoids presenting a clear program or policy positions. In the past her radical views attracted her to socialist financier George Soros funded groups like “Common Cause.”

As a member of the Board of Education, she has done little to advance the ‘level of cognitive development’ of our children. She has used her position to promote the idea that ‘systematic racism’ is pervasive in Newtown. She was [an organizer] of BLM demonstrations in Newtown. Her campaign staff shamed anyone who failed to say ‘their words,’ including our First Selectman, Dan Rosenthal, and her opponent Representative Mitch Bolinsky.

Rebekah Harriman-Stites is the wrong candidate for Newtown. She simply doesn’t possess the ‘political experience’ to confront the challenges facing Newtown. She has a checkered past of blaming others for the school’s failure to resolve current problems. She calls out for radical changes. She has organized a negative blame campaign, all the while claiming victimhood. She has yet to present an articulated plan that would include specific solutions to improve the quality of life for Newtown residents.

The only intelligent choice on election day is the reelection of Mitch Bolinsky. He has the experience, the temperament, and the achievements that will continue as our State Representative.

Dr Rudy Magnan

I’m wondering if Dr. Magnan has actually read any of Ms. Harriman-Stites’s position statements and/or listened to any of the many video/zoom forums that she has participated in. The letter indicates not since many of his statements are exaggerated, inflammatory or unnecessarily disrespectful.

This letter is offensive and inaccurate.
1.Rebekah Harriman-Stites has stated clearly that she does not support removing school resource officers from our schools and that she supports police reform (not defunding) which is desperately needed everywhere.
    2. Rebekah Harriman-Stites would be correct in stating that there is a problem with systemic racism in Newtown Schools and that we need to do better.
    3. I will be voting for Rebekah Harriman-Stites.

@christineelizabethm- Do you have examples of “systemic racism” in Newtown schools?

Why then run on the Working Families Party ticket and celebrate their endorsement? That Party is reportedly strongly in favor of defunding the police.
