FAIRFIELD — As part of a national initiative inspired by the shootings in Sandy Hook and designated by President Obama, the public is invited to participate in a conversation about mental health in the community. NAMI Fairfield will host an evening of conversation on Wednesday, November 13, from 6 to 9 pm, at First Congregational Church, 148 Beach Road.

One in four adults — approximately 61.5 million Americans — struggle with mental illness, including depression, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, or posttraumatic stress disorder. Nearly 5 million children have some type of serious mental illness that interferes with their daily life.

Many families in Fairfield County have been impacted by mental illness and the tragic consequences that can occur when adequate systems and supports do not exist or are not accessible.

The events in Sandy Hook last December have particular resonance as families, educators, and public officials struggle to address the need for effective interventions and meaningful support.

Earlier this year, President Obama called for a “national conversation to increase understanding about mental health.” As a leading advocate for people living with mental illness and their families in Fairfield and area towns, NAMI Fairfield encourages community members to attend.

Concerned parents and high school students, senior citizens and civic leaders, people living with a mental illness and their family members all offer valuable insights and perspectives that contribute towards solutions.

Topics of discussion will include:

*What does mental health mean to me? To us as a community?

*What are the challenges and factors we should consider?

*What are our primary challenges and concerns?

*What can we do to support young people?

*What interventions are needed?

*What steps do we want and need to take as a community?

The evening promises to be interactive and engaging. Light refreshments will be served and seating is limited, so register early.
