Hockey Players Carve Up Competition For Thanksgiving Tourney Win

Newtown hockey players in the Western Connecticut Youth Hockey League led the Squirt B team to first place in the Watertown Thanksgiving Tournament at Taft School this past week.

Newtown skaters Justin Halmose, goaltender Forest Anderson, Adam Kliczewski, Tyler Christian, Wing, Griffin Fitzsimmons, and Christian Gardecki, helped the team to the trophy. The Squirt Bs also include Newtown resident and Assistant Coach David Christian.

The boys carved up the competition in their Turkey Day weekend effort. They won all of their games in the tournament except for one in a loss to a team from Northwestern.

On Sunday, the Western Connecticut team faced Northwestern again for championship, and avenged that setback to skate away with a 2-1 victory. Northwestern scored first in the opening minutes of the game. Anderson notched Western Connecticut’s the first goal in the second period to tie the game. With Halmose defending the goal, Northwestern didn’t score again. Christian Gardecki, Griffin Fitzsimmons, and Tyler Christian provided aggressive offense to keep Northwestern at bay. Late in the third period, Kliczewski sent a low hard puck into the corner of the net for what proved to be the game-winning goal.
