The Connecticut Interscholastic Athletic Conference (CIAC) Football Committee has approved a request from Newtown High Athletic Director Gregg Simon that if the Nighthawks advance to the Class LL title game, it will be played Friday, December 13.

The CIAC typically schedules one championship on Friday and the remaining three on Saturday. With December 14 being the first anniversary of the events of 12/14 at Sandy Hook Elementary School, Mr Simon had requested a change of game date for his team.

CIAC Director Of Media & Sports Information Joel Cookson confirmed on Monday afternoon that the committee received the request, “and the football committee approved it,” he said via email to The Newtown Bee. “If Newtown is in it, the LL final will be Dec. 13,” his response continued.

The state high school football tournament begins Tuesday, December 3, with 16 quarterfinal games throughout the state. Newtown (12-0), the top seed in Class LL and ranked No. 2 in state ratings, will host No. 8 Ridgefield at Newtown High School. Kickoff at Blue & Gold Stadium on Tuesday night is 6:30 pm.

The Nighthawks capped their perfect season with a win a 42-7 win over Masuk on November 26. The team finished the regular season with an 11-0 record, or 12-0 overall with the South-West Conference title game win over Brookfield five days earlier.
