Longtime SNET Lineman And Engineer

George E. Minck, 85, of Newtown, died suddenly, November 16, in Boca Grande, Fla. The son of Pauline and William Minck, he was born in Torrington, June 24, 1925, and was a lifelong resident of Connecticut.

Mr Minck fought extensively in the Pacific in World War II aboard PT Boat 335 and also was recalled for PT duty for the Korean War.

He worked for Southern New England Telephone Company as a lineman and engineer for 34 years, and later as a consultant for Woodbury Telephone Company, earning the nickname of 1-800-Call-George for his experience and wisdom.

He was very active in the Bethel community, serving for many years on the Bethel Planning and Zoning Commission, as Bethel Little League baseball coach, and as a lector and usher at St Mary’s Catholic Church in Bethel.

He is survived by Jean Marie (McNulty) Minck, his wife of 60 years; children, Gary of Duluth, Minn., Sharon of Sharon, Mass., Leslie Weber and her husband, Henry, of Lake Forest, Ill.; and four grandchildren.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be at St Mary’s Catholic Church in Bethel, Monday, December 6, at 10 am. Burial will follow at St Peter Cemetery, Danbury.
