Children’s Programs

*Children’s Craft Workshop: join Mrs Walker for a seasonal craft workshop on Saturday, December 6, from 1 to 2 pm, in the children’s department. The workshop is open to children ages 6 and older. A $3 material fee is due upon registration. Sign up in the children’s department; phone registrations will not be accepted.

*Gingerbread Workshop: Come decorate your own gingerbread house with royal icing and festive candies. A special workshop will be held on Saturday, December 13, at 3 pm, in the library’s lower meeting room. A $3 material fee is due upon registration. Sign up in the children’s department. Phone registrations will not be accepted.

*The Return of Rabbi Praver: Rabbi Praver is returning with his guitar and talent to C.H. Booth Library on Sunday, December 14, at 3 pm, for an hour of Israeli and American folk music for children ages 4 to 7. The program is free and no registration is required.

*Booth Players To Perform: The C.H. Booth Players theatrical group, under the direction of Leland Kellogg, will perform its unique interpretation of the 12th Century morality play Everyman on Saturday, December 20, at 11 am, in the library’s Olga Koepkne Meeting Room. The setting is a modern day circus, and the message is appropriate for the season.

The performance is recommended for ages 6 and older. Admission is free and open to the public.

Young Adults

*Book Discussion: Join us on Wednesday, December 3, from 4:30 to 5:30 pm, for a discussion of Odysseus in the Serpent Maze by Jane Yolen and Robert J. Harris. This is a swashbuckling adventure complete with mythical Greek heroes and pirates.

*New Date For Stamp Art Workshops: Barbara Shohet’s workshop for Winter & Festive Stamp Art has been rescheduled for Wednesday, December 10, from 4 to 6 pm.

Use your creative energy to make a gift bag or box, greeting cards, and even a stationery portfolio. Samples are on display in the library. The workshop is for those in grades 6 and up. There are just 15 spaces available, and a $5 supply fee will be necessary when you register. Sign up at the Main Floor Circulation Desk or call the library.

*Chill With Will: Professional actress and teacher Leland Kellogg of Newtown will bring Shakespeare to life through various levels of multimedia in “Chill With Will: A Young Adults Shakespeare Workshop.” Young adults will write and star in their own Shakespeare movie short, and turn Shakespeare’s sonnets into TV commercials.

The five-session workshop will meet on Fridays, January 9 to February 6. The group will meet from 2 to 5 pm for the first four weeks. The workshop will culminate with a Friday evening performance at the library (snow date February 13).

The workshop is geared for students in grades 7 and above, and is limited to 15 participants. Cost is $75, payable at sign-up; call the library or visit the main floor circulation desk.

Adult Programs

*Frida Kahlo, In Slides: On Thursday, December 11 at 7:30, the art historian Heike Stucke will give a slide show and talk on Frida Kahlo focusing on her life and art. Admission is free. Please sign up for the program by calling the library.

*‘A Child’s Christmas’ With Holiday Music: A Child’s Christmas in Wales will be brought to life by storyteller and actor Peter Loffredo on Tuesday, December 9, at 7 pm. The story tells the poignant tale of Dylan Thomas’ warm childhood and Christmas memories while growing up in Wales.

Prior to the reading Duane Reilley and David Childs will perform some holiday music on keyboard and saxophone. Homemade treats will be served. The program is free and the public is invited to enjoy a pleasant evening full of good holiday cheer.

*1854 Newtown Maps: One of the library’s beautiful historical maps of Newtown has been reproduced by the Friends of The C.H. Booth Library and can be yours for $40. The 1854 map measures 24 by 30 inches and is printed on 100% cotton rag. It features several familiar Newtown landmarks including homes, businesses, and churches.
