$15,000 Grant Awarded To Friends Of Music

State Representative Julia B. Wasserman, R-106th District, has secured a $15,000 state grant for Newtown Friends of Music Inc. that will support the organization’s Visiting Artists and School Outreach Program, which gives students an opportunity to hear and interact with world-class musicians and their music.

The Connecticut Commission on the Arts in conjunction with the state Office of Policy and Management awarded the grant.

“This grant will give Newtown students the opportunity to hear some truly great music performed by accomplished musicians in two live concerts,” Rep Wasserman said. “It’s a wonderful experience that can instill in young people a love of great music that will last for the rest of their lives.”

The grant will fund a performance by the Amadeus Trio in February 2002 and by a brass or wind quintet during the fall of 2002. The three-faceted program will include preparing students to listen to the concerts intelligently; attendance at the concerts; and a master class experience in the schools on the following day, according to the grant application filed with OPM by Ellen K. Parella, president of Newtown Friends of Music, Inc.
