A Lighter Look At Colonoscopy

DANBURY — As part of National Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month, Danbury Hospital is showing the video, Screening Saves Lives: A Lighter Look at Colonoscopy, on the Danbury Hospital website www.danburyhospital.com. Visitors may access the video link on the right side of website’s homepage.

The purpose of the video is to help patients overcome the fear of colonoscopies. The video provides information about the importance of having a colonoscopy to screen for colon and rectal cancers.

It gives an overview of what to expect when a colonoscopy is scheduled at Danbury Hospital, and includes a look at the endoscopy suite. Viewers also learn more about the Connecticut debut of Coco, the Colossal Colon, a 40-foot-long, 4-foot-high replica of a colon, designed to promote digestive health. Danbury Hospital brought The Colossal Colon to Danbury in 2004 as part of its Colorectal Health Expo at the Danbury Fair Mall. During the expo, an estimated 1,000 people stopped by to learn more about the signs and symptoms of colorectal cancer and how to prevent it.

The Colossal Colon is the creation of Molly McMaster, a colon cancer survivor who was diagnosed on her 23rd birthday, with the help and support from the clinical and educational staff of the C.R. Wood Cancer Center at Glens Falls Hospital in Glens Falls, N.Y. Ms McMaster came to the Danbury Hospital Colorectal Health Expo to talk about her experience with colon cancer, and to meet with those who came to view The Colossal Colon.
