After seeing their seven-game winning streak stopped by host Bunnell of Stratford on January 29, Newtown High School’s boys’ basketball team didn’t wait long to begin what they hope is another long stretch of victories. The Nighthawks, one night later, got past host New Milford 60-55 to improve to 9-3 overall (4-1 in South-West Conference play). The Green Wave fell to 7-6 (4-2).

The Nighthawks had three players in double figures. Will Dalton had 15 points, three rebounds, three assists, two steals, and a blocked shot; Harry Depuy scored 12, pulled down four rebounds, contributed two assists, and came up with a steal; and Jacob Burden dropped in ten points, had five rebounds, three assists, and a steal.

Dylan Palumbo scored six points and had five rebounds; Mason Melillo had five points, three rebounds, an assist, and a block; Jeremy Doski scored five points, pulled down a team-best eight rebounds, had three assists, two steals, and a block; Charlie Huegi scored three points, grabbed five rebounds, dished out six assists, and had three steals; and Tom Cotton added two points.

Against Bunnell, in a game that had been rescheduled because of snow, Newtown fell behind 24-11 at halftime and lost 63-45. This was a battle of red-hot conference unbeatens; the Bulldogs made it seven wins in a row and improved to 9-3 overall (6-0 in conference action) with a win at New Fairfield on January 30.

In the Bunnell game, Depuy had 14 points, 11 rebounds, and a trio of steals; and Dalton had 11 points.

The Nighthawks will host Joel Barlow of Redding on Tuesday, February 3; tipoff is at 7 pm. Then, Newtown will host Kolbe Cathedral on Thursday, February 5, also at 7 pm. The Nighthawks defeated Kolbe earlier this season.

Newtown defenders Jacob Burden, Will Dalton, and Dylan Palumbo defend Bunnell's Ryan Pittman during a 63-45 loss on January 29. The Nighthawks won their next game, defeating New Milford 60-55 one night later.
