e Editor:

On Tuesday, October 23, The Newtown Bee sponsored a political forum featuring local candidates running for the Connecticut General Assembly. I had intended to write a letter of endorsement for Raghib Allie-Brennan because I live in Newtown’s 2nd district, but after listening to the three Democratic contenders speak to a variety of diverse and complex issues, I came away thinking I simply had to endorse all three.

Michelle McCabe is running for State Senate in the 28th district; Rebekah Harriman-Stites is running for State Representative in the 106th district; and Raghib Allie-Brennan is running for State Representative in the 2nd district. It was encouraging to see that not only is civic discourse is alive and well, but thoughtful, cogent responses can still persuade. The Democratic candidates had a decided edge in this category. Raghib, Michelle, and Rebekah addressed some weighty issues: the state budget deficit, the pension shortfall, paid family medical leave, and Connecticut’s aging infrastructure. Their responses were lucid, innovative, and specific; it’s clear that they’ve all done their homework.

If you want to restore your faith in government, please vote for Michelle McCabe for State Senate and either Rebekah Harriman-Stites if you live Newtown’s 106th district or Raghib Allie-Brennan if you live in Newtown’s 2nd district. These Democrats are tenacious. Their sound judgment and good will are sure to bring favorable results for Connecticut.

Sincerely,

Lisa Schwartz
