Celebrating A Week

For Pets

May 1–9 is Be Kind to Animals Week and National Pet Week, a week being promoted by the Newtown Canine Advocates and the Spay & Neuter Association of Newtown (SNAN), and other area animal welfare groups.

Be Kind to Animals Week was established in 1915 by the American Humane Society as a way to celebrate the unique bond between humans and animals, a novel idea at the time when common opinion held that animals were placed on the earth to be used and abused, if need be, for profit. National Pet Week started 16 years ago.

Canine Advocates will be holding a tag sale on Sunday, May 16, from 9 am to 5 pm, in front of Dr Evans’ office on Mt Pleasant Road (Route 6). There will be bake sale items including homemade dog bones.

Canine advocates is a nonprofit organization that volunteers to further the safety and health of dogs at the Newtown dog pound and assists in the adoption process through advertising, screening and education, and promotes rescue referrals.

SNAN has provided spay and neuter help for cats and dogs in Newtown and surrounding towns for more than 20 years.
