CERAMIC ART BROTHER THOMAS

CERAMIC ART BROTHER THOMAS – 1 CUT –

SS/jl set 12-26

WILLIAMSTOWN, MASS. — A collection of porcelain vessels and tea bowls by Brother Thomas Bezanson, a world renowned ceramic artist, is currently on view at The Harrison Gallery. Originally from Halifax, Nova Scotia, Brother Thomas studied art at the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design and traveled extensively in Europe before entering the Benedictine Monastery at Weston Priory in Vermont, where he taught philosophy and practiced his art for 25 years. Since 1985 he has been artist-in-residence at Mount Saint Benedict in Erie, Penn.

The work is an example of an artist’s synthesis with life and the creative spirit of nature. Collected by individuals and museums around the world, Brother Thomas is known both for the creative originality of his forms and the extraordinary beauty of his glazes, many of which he has developed over the past 50 years. Whether it is a traditional vase with a glowing copper red glaze, a curvaceous abstract form covered in a wintry ice crackle wash, or a delicate tea bowl with a flashing swirl of ash yellow, each of these works represent a quiet and contemplative response to an artist’s discovery of beauty.

His ceramic art is represented in over 50 museums including The Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Smithsonian Institution, the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, the Vatican Museum Collection in Rome, and the Victoria and Albert Museum in London.

Other artists currently on view at The Harrison Gallery include Mary Sipp Green and Jim Schantz of Stockbridge, Chet Kalm and Audrey Blafield of Lenox, and John MacDonald of Williamstown. The Gallery, 39 Spring Street, is open Tuesday through Saturday, 10 am to 5:30 pm and Sunday, Noon – 5 pm.
