The Newtown Bee has been informed of vandalism at the Commerce Road post office.

United States Postal Service employees discovered the vandalism this morning around 6:30 am. The Express mailbox located in the parking lot of the postal facility on Commerce Road had been broken into, and mail was removed.

Residents who left mail in that collection box after 2:30 pm Sunday, April 28, should contact the intended recipients. Any checks that were mailed from that location should be canceled immeidately.

Anyone with any information or concerns should contact the US Postal Inspection Service at 877-876-2455 or postalinspectors.uspis.gov

Mailboxes are considered federal property, and federal law (Title 18, United States Code, Section 1705) makes it a crime to vandalize them or destroy any mail deposited in them. Postal Inspectors treat mailbox vandalism as a federal offense. Violators can be fined up to $250,000, or imprisoned for up to three years, for each act of vandalism.
