The Newtown Community Center Committee has released its mission statement and logo to the public.

The mission is of the center, currently under construction at Fairfield Hills, is to provide "a multigenerational hub that enhances our community by promoting social interaction, health and wellness, creative opportunities, and personal growth."

Community Center Director Matthew Ariniello said the mission statement reflects that "we are more than just a facility with pools.

"We will be able to provide programs, activities, and events to serve all populations,” Mr Ariniello added. “The Community Center Committee worked together to establish a statement that reflected the intention of the gift and the wishes for the community."

The logo — which incorporates the silhouette of a flagpole and steeples — “reflects an icon and symbol of our town that is recognizable and represents a sense of community,” said Mr Ariniello.

Community Center Committee Chairman Kinga Walsh said the committee is looking forward to the release of the logo, which "clearly says ‘Newtown,’ promoting the Center and its offerings, and for the grand opening in 2019."

The new 45,860-square-foot building will include separate community center and senior center areas.

The community center’s facilities, totaling approximately 35,210 square feet, will include an arts and crafts room; six multipurpose activity rooms to accommodate activities ranging from music to group gatherings; a commercial kitchen; an approximately 5,000-square-foot banquet room; a six-lane, 25-yard pool; a zero-entry activity pool; and outdoor connections to the surrounding area of the Fairfield Hills campus.

The separate senior center of 9,450 square feet will cater to seniors’ programs and activities and strive to enhance and expand the current program offerings.

The project is funded through a 2013 gift from GE of $15 million for the development, construction, and operation of a community center. From GE is $10 million to design and build and another $5 million to underwrite at least five years of operating expenses.

The town is bonding an additional $5 million approved in the year’s Capital Improvement Plan (CIP) to supplement the initial $10 million capital gift. Another $3 million of CIP money is funding the senior center.

Residents interested in seeing the facility during its construction phase have several opportunities this month. Mr Ariniello will be leading Walk & Talk events on Wednesdays, October 3-24. Discussion will include construction, programming, and membership. Walks will begin at 8:30 am at the community center site on Simpson Street, opposite Newtown Municipal Center.

In addition, the Community Center director and committee members will be present at many fall events in Newtown — including Newtown Day on October 6 at Fairfield Hills; The Great Pumpkin Races, October 20, behind Edmond Town Hall; and Halloween evening, in front of Edmond Town Hall — to educate residents on the project.
