Congregation Adath Israel of Newtown is pleased to announce it will participate in Read Hebrew America, a program offered by the National Jewish Outreach Program (NJOP). As one of hundreds of locations across North America, Adath Israel will offer adults the opportunity to learn to read Hebrew through eight free classes.

Classes at Adath Israel will begin on October 24 and will be taught by Rabbi Barukh Schectman. One-hour sessions will continue on Tuesday evenings, beginning at 6:30, through December. The classes will be held at the synagogue, 115 Huntingtown Road.

Adults interested in registering for the course should call Adath Israel at 203-426-5188 or email their interest at office@congadathisrael.org.  The course is open to everyone in Newtown and neighboring communities.

Read Hebrew America is geared for beginning and intermediate readers. It is the ideal way to learn how to follow synagogue services, to be more involved in a child's Jewish education, or simply to enhance one's own ties to Judaism.

NJOP was established by Rabbi Ephraim Z. Buchwald in 1987, in response to the urgent need to address the critical issue of the spiraling losses of Jews from Jewish life due to assimilation and lack of Jewish knowledge.

NJOP has become one of the largest and most successful organizations in the world, sponsoring Shabbat Across America/Canada, Turn Friday Night into Shabbat, Passover Across America, and Sukkot Across America, together with Judaic education classes.

Since its founding, NJOP has successfully reached more than 1.6 million North American Jews and engaged them in Jewish life.
