Hearts were aflutter in the C.H. Booth Library during its special Make a Valentine program on February 7.

Library visitors were invited to stop by the chbMAKERS’ Corner, anytime between 3:30 and 5:30 pm, to learn how to make a customized Valentine’s Day card with Young Adult Librarian Abbey Lynch.

Ms Lynch operated the library’s Cricut machine that is designed to precisely cut pieces of scrapbooking paper into a variety of shapes — like different sized hearts.

Norah Rebar, 6½, decorated the front of her card with more than half a dozen paper hearts in shades of pink, red, and purple. She made the card for her cousin’s upcoming birthday and inspired her mom, Catty Rebar, to make a birthday-themed card as well.

“We’re freestyling, too,” Ms Lynch said at the class, encouraging participants to make the type of card they desired.

Norah’s younger brother, Elliot Rebar, 4½, signed his name next to a big heart on the cover of his Valentine’s Day card, which he said is for his Grandpa.

Across the table, 10-year-old Adrielle Hooke sat with her mom, Desiree Hooke, and utilized the colorful markers and scrapbooking paper to make their Valentine’s Day cards.

While Adrielle worked on a card for her friend Jessie, Ms Hooke created a Valentine for her husband.

Cricut Machine

“The library has had the Cricut since 2016,” Ms Lynch explained about the machine used at the Make a Valentine program. “It can be used to cut paper, cardstock, and vinyl. I would say [the] majority of the patrons who use it are using it for paper crafts.”

Ms Lynch added, “Orientations are done one-on-one or in small groups, as needed, and take between 60 to 90 minutes. After having the orientation, patrons are welcome to come in to use the machine independently whenever it’s available.”
