Newtown Continuing Education’s SMART (Summer Music and Art) Camp first week of summer classes, July 8 to 12, included smiling students attending a range of programs.

By July 11, SMART Camp Program Director Kirsten Tuz said everything was “going well.”

The camp is held at Head O’ Meadow Elementary School. According to a description from Newtown Continuing Education, SMART Camp is for students exiting kindergarten to sixth grade, and it offers “creative arts, theater, science, and more with a staff of professional artists and teachers.”

Campers rotate through classes each day. New classes this year include cartooning and manga, studio art, and “animals of the land and sea,” according to Ms Tuz.

Inside the Clay Workshop class, students worked to paint piggy banks on July 11.

“I think it’s really fun, because usually when I use clay I just use tiny clay... but here we can make bowls and more,” said camper Audrey McLennan, 10.

Between painting his bank, Ian McKee, 9, said he likes attending the camp because “It’s very fun. I like all of SMART.”

In another classroom, campers in the Icky Sticky Ooey Gooey Chemistry!! class were busy making slime. Nearby campers in the Mosaics and Paper Art class were making fish using heart-shaped pieces of paper for scales. Every classroom was filled with smiling children as the classes were underway.

The first SMART Camp session ran from July 8 to July 19, and Session II is set to run July 22 to August 2, 8:30 am to 1 pm, $349, at Head O’ Meadow. Enrollment is still open, and Ms Tuz said parents can “walk in” with their campers on the first day to sign-up.
